Over 900ac of new solar farms entered the planning system in recent weeks. Multiple counties have seen significant project submissions, while others are moving into the appeals phase.

In Wexford, Shelbourne Solar Ltd has submitted a planning application for a large solar farm covering about 349ac across the townlands of Ballykeerogemore, Ballykeerogebeg, Knockea and Garryduff.

The proposal includes a 10-year planning permission window to construct the project, alongside the installation of 32 battery energy storage modules.

Once operational, the solar farm is expected to remain in place for 40 years.

In Kildare, BNRG Bracklone Ltd has applied for permission to develop a 149ac solar farm, with 93ac located in Co. Kildare and 56ac extending into Co Laois.

The developer is seeking a 10-year planning permission period, with an operational lifespan of 40 years and an estimated generation capacity of 32MW of solar PV.

In Tipperary, Patricks Rock Solar Ltd has submitted plans for a 373ac solar farm spanning nine townlands, including Monadreela, Boscabell, George’s-Land and Mocklershill.

Connection

A grid connection will form part of the overall project but is expected to be dealt with under a separate planning application. The project was submitted on 17 October but was later deemed incomplete by Tipperary County Council.

Meanwhile, several projects have moved into the appeals stage. In Longford, Foigha Solar Farm Ltd has secured permission, subject to 26 planning conditions, for a 321ac solar farm in Keenagh and Ballymahon.

In Cork, Integer Energy Ltd received permission for a smaller 22ac development near Kinsale, while in Kildare, Cadamstown Solar Limited was refused permission for a 428ac project.

All three decisions have now been appealed.
