Cheetah Electronics has developed a new product to prevent farm machinery and vehicle damage caused by rodents
The company - based in Ballon, Co Carlow - has launched its rodent shield system, which uses electric shocks to deter rodents instead of poison or traps.
Mice, rats and other rodents can cause serious damage to farm machinery by chewing through wires and insulation, which can be worse for machines that are in storage and idle for prolonged periods of time.
Cheetah Electronics’ system creates a protective barrier around the machine and when a rodent makes contact, it receives an electric shock that deters it.
Cheetah Electronics founder Padraic George said: “Rodent damage is a silent and costly threat that many farmers face and often without even knowing it until it's too late.”

The system will be shown at four major farming events, the first of which is the Crops and Technology open day on 25 June at the Teagasc Crops and Research Centre in Oak Park, Co Carlow.
After this, it will also be showcased at Tullamore Show on 10 August, National Ploughing Championships from 16 to 18 September and FTMTA Machinery Show in Punchestown in November.
“With rodent shield systems, we wanted to build a smart, safe and practical solution that gives peace of mind,” added George.
“We've spent years listening to farmers and this is just the start of what we hope to bring to the farming community.”
