The Department of Agriculture has issued a reminder to farmers advising them that unprotected urea in granulated form will be no longer permitted for use from 14 September.

Protected urea remains permitted for use after this date, as is unprotected urea in liquid form.

This restriction on spreading regular or traditional urea not protected with a urease inhibitor during manufacture will apply to all solid chemical fertiliser with a ureic nitrogen content of 1% or higher.

It includes blends with secondary macronutrients like sulphur and/or micronutrients such as selenium, but does not apply to blends or compounds containing unprotected urea and phosphorus.

“Moving from unprotected urea to urea in a protected form is a key element of Ireland’s approach to reducing ammonia emissions and ensuring continued compliance with ammonia reduction targets,” the Department said.
