Sinn Féin lost a motion in the Dáil this Wednesday night which called on Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon to remove Bord Bia chair Larry Murrin from his position.

The Government won the vote by 88 votes to 61 after it amended the motion in support of Murrin.

Speaking prior to the vote, Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny had called on Government backbench TDs to “have the backbone to hold their position in tonight’s vote and stand up for Irish farmers”.

“This is not about political point scoring - it is about our reputation as a food producer on the world stage,” he said.

Deputy Kenny said that the “Government is circling the wagons to protect one of their own” and that it was putting the future of Irish agriculture on the line in doing so.

“This issue needs to be resolved and Larry Murrin must go for that to happen,” he said.

Committee meeting

Earlier in the evening, members of the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) and the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association (ICSA) appeared before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture to discuss the ongoing issues surrounding Larry Murrin in his position as chair of Bord Bia.

Farm organisations are enraged with Murrin’s company Dawn Farm Foods importing 1% of its beef supply from Brazil in 2025.

The remaining 99% of the company’s beef was sourced from Ireland, the UK and the EU.
