Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather warning for five counties in north-west as it forecast hail, sleet and snow over Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Counties Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo have been warned to brace for wintry showers and snows that are expected to see “some modest accumulations in places, especially on high ground”.

The status yellow warning is to kick on midnight Wednesday and remain in place until noon on Thursday.

The forecaster has told the public that the cold snap could bring hazardous travelling conditions and icy stretches on roads.

Temperatures are expected to turn chillier into the middle of this week before milder Atlantic air returns on Friday.

Wednesday night is forecast to see lowest temperatures plummet to between -3 to 2°C, being coldest in the east and south.

Thursday is to start cold and frosty with some shower in the west and north as day goes on, with daytime temperatures not going above 3 to 7°C before dropping quickly after dark to lows of -3 to 2°C.
