Macra members across the country are being encouraged to put themselves or deserving fellow members forward as applications open for the 2026 National Leadership Awards and Volunteer of the Year Awards.
The awards recognise the enormous contribution made by members at every level of the organisation, celebrating those who lead from the front, support their clubs behind the scenes, and help make Macra the vibrant organisation it is today.
The Macra National Leadership Awards recognise outstanding leaders within the organisation and are judged on activities and involvement between August 2025 and July 2026.
Members can either apply themselves or be nominated by another member. The competition assesses key leadership qualities, including mentorship, encouragement, empathy, respect, positive attitude and decisiveness.
Candidates will progress through several stages, including written applications, interviews and a final problem-solving challenge before the winners are crowned at the awards ceremony in the Athlone Springs Hotel on 3 October.
Finalists will receive a president’s medal, while the top three winners will each receive a €1,000 cash prize, along with their trophy.
Alongside the leadership awards, Macra is also seeking nominations for its Volunteer of the Year Awards, which recognise the members who dedicate huge amounts of time and effort to supporting their clubs, counties and regions.
Unlike the leadership awards, these focus specifically on volunteering and contribution to the organisation. Awards will be presented to members from each of the three regions, Leinster, Munster and the northwest.
Nominees must be put forward by their club secretary, with judging focusing on involvement, positive attitude and overall contribution to Macra life. Following interviews and member voting, the regional winners will be announced at the same October awards ceremony. Each winner will receive a trophy and €300 prize.
Both competitions highlight the incredible commitment and enthusiasm shown by Macra members nationwide. From organising events and competitions to supporting fellow members and helping clubs thrive, volunteers and leaders are the backbone of the organisation.
Macra national president Josephine O’Neill noted the importance of acknowledging these leaders and volunteers across the country.
“Macra has long been associated with personal development and training leaders – an element of our organisation that continues to ring true today,” she said.
“Within every club, county and region, there are leaders who take on roles, work behind the scenes and organise countless events, fundraisers and opportunities for their fellow members and local communities. These awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the leaders and volunteers who form the backbone of Macra, and give us a chance to say thank you for all you do.
“I’d encourage everyone to consider applying or nominating a worthy recipient and wish all entrants the best of luck.”
Applications and nominations for both awards opened on 11 May, with closing dates set for Wednesday, 1 July.
Members interested in applying or nominating someone are encouraged to contact their local club or training and development officer for further information.
