The straw trade remains in the doldrums despite the atrocious weather of the last few weeks.

Traders active in the straw and fodder supply business say demand has remained extremely muted, with very little product moving.

Well-known straw and fodder trader John Fearon said there was very little bite in the market at the moment.

“The straw job is pretty quiet,” Fearon pointed out.

The recent downturn in the weather had prompted a “bit more activity”, he conceded, but there had been no surge in sales. This assessment of the market was repeated by a number of other traders.

While some pointed out that poor straw demand invariably followed a good harvest, increased imports of Spanish straw in 2025 was also cited as having hit demand for local product.
