Animal Health Ireland (AHI), along with Teagasc’s DairyBeef 500 campaign, has launched a roadshow summer series on calf care.

The aim of the roadshow is to promote calf care and the potential for beef production from the dairy herd.

The roadshow is set for four consecutive nights from Monday 23 June to Thursday 26 June at the following farms:

  • Monday 23 June: Gareth Peoples (Tullyannon, Carrigans, Co Donegal, F93 HK20).
  • Tuesday 24 June: Tipperary calf to beef demonstration farm (Fethard, Co Tipperary, E91 E0X3).
  • Wednesday 25 June: ABP demonstration farm (Clonegal, Co Carlow, Y21 R884).
  • Thursday 26 June: Irvine Allen (Williamstown, Co Westmeath, N37 T327).
  • All events will commence at 7pm, followed by refreshments.

    Topics

The event will showcase a range of topics such as maintaining average daily gain to achieve optimal performance, mid-season grass management and achieving good-quality silage and parasite control at grass.

AHI said that the event is supported by Volac Milk Replacers Ireland Ltd’s Feed For Growth initiative and will provide farmers with expert knowledge on calf rearing and maintaining animal health mid-season.

AHI calf care programme manager Michelle McGrath said that the series "will deliver the latest information and advice on boosting animal performance, discuss the significance of quality silage, up-to-date health checks on your herd and what farmers need to prioritise across the board".

Teagasc’s DairyBeef 500 programme co-ordinator Alan Dillon said: “These events will be a new venture for AHI and Teagasc in highlighting the importance of mid-season management for calves. The first 12 months of life is where ground is lost in calf to beef systems and these events will help address some of the issues facing farmers.”
