The National Poc Fada Final took place on 20 June at Clonmel Racecourse, where competitors tested their striking ability, accuracy and stamina in one of Macra’s best-loved sporting competitions. Played over a long-distance course, Poc Fada combines skill and strategy and remains a favourite fixture on the summer calendar.
After a highly competitive contest, Jack McMahon of Sixmilebridge-Kilmurry Macra, Co Clare, claimed the men’s title. After two tie-breaker rounds, Miriam Walton of Callan Macra, Co Kilkenny, took home the women’s crown.
Both competitors produced impressive performances to add their names to the list of national champions.
The action then moved from the playing field to the judging ring for the national dairy stock judging final, held in Cork on 8 July.
Stock judging is one of Macra’s flagship agricultural competitions, testing competitors’ ability to assess dairy cattle and demonstrate their knowledge of conformation, functionality and breeding traits.
The senior title stayed on Leeside, with Stephen Shannon of Ballinascarthy Macra, Carbery Region, Co Cork, securing first place after an excellent display of judging and reasoning skills.
Simon Lanigan of Callan Macra, Co Kilkenny, finished as senior runner-up.
Future looks bright
The future of the competition also looks bright, with a strong showing in the under-23 section.
Daniel Devine of Fermoy Macra, Carbery Region, Co Cork, claimed the under-23 title, while Ciarán Doyle of Blackstairs Macra, Co Wexford, took the runner-up spot.
These competitions highlight the diversity of opportunities available through Macra.
Whether competing on the sports field, developing practical agricultural skills or simply getting involved at club level, members continue to challenge themselves, learn new skills and build friendships.
