The Teagasc FutureBeef farm walk on the farm of James Skehan, Ballynevin, Bridgetown, Killaloe, Co Clare, which was set to take place on Friday 4 September at 6pm has been postponed until Friday 11 September at 5pm.
It follows the sad passing of Declan Murphy, retired Teagasc Ennis adviser.
“Our deepest sympathy to his wife Mary, their children, family and friends. Declan will be sadly missed by his Teagasc colleagues, may he rest in peace,” Teagasc has said.
James, along with his wife Joanne, children Nelly and Macarton and his father Batt, operate a 27 cow-calf-pair spring-calving suckler herd alongside his full-time off-farm employment.
This farm is a good example of how careful planning, efficient grassland management and a focus on labour can help make a beef enterprise work successfully on a part-time basis, Teagasc said.
James will explain how he has increased beef output and margins on the farm over the past three years.
As part of the Teagasc FutureBeef programme, James has been working closely with his Teagasc adviser Tom Gleeson and the wider team to identify areas where improvements can be made on the farm.
The focus is on producing quality beef efficiently, while also improving the overall profitability and sustainability of the enterprise.
The topics which will be covered on the day include financials, breeding, soil health, herd health, finishing cattle demonstration, red clover and grazing infrastructure.
