The Teagasc team will be out in full force at Tullamore Show this coming weekend. There will be a number of stands for farmers to speak and engage with the Teagasc team.
Teagasc advisory
The advisory team will be on hand throughout the day to answer farmer queries. The focus of the advisory stand is 'From cow to table, nature’s way'.
This theme is to showcase the positive contribution the cow can make to feeding the nation in a sustainable way.
There will be a range of products - both novel and obvious - that can be derived from a grass-fed cow. The advisory stand is located at L102.
Teagasc organics
Advisers from the Teagasc organics team will be on hand to answer any questions about the factors to consider and the steps involved when converting to organics.
The team will be located in the national organic training skillnet (NOTS) organic village located at stand L54A.
Teagasc forestry
Teagasc forestry advisers will be on hand to discuss all aspects of forestry, particularly in relation to forest creation and management of existing forests.
The forest industry will be strongly represented with companies from the afforestation, management, harvesting and products sectors.
The renewable energy sector will also be well represented by companies from the biomass, renewable heating and solar energy sectors. The forestry and energy section will be located on rows W and X.
Sustainable livestock village
The sustainable livestock village will have key agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, Teagasc, Bord Bia, the ICBF, Animal Health Ireland, Meat Industry Ireland and Dairy Industry Ireland.
These agencies will be working together to deliver advice to farmers around sustainability practices that can be adopted on farm and the supports available.
Teagasc is a partner in the sustainable livestock village. The advisory and specialist team will be showcasing technologies that farmers can adopt to improve environmental sustainability on farm and improve their beef and lamb production.
This will include a demonstration of AgNav, the online platform to provide farmers with support to identify mitigation strategies for the farm to deliver on climate action.
The Teagasc focus will be on three areas:
Improving soil fertility by correcting soil pH using lime.Improving silage quality to drive animal performance.Reducing the age of finish for beef cattle.Staff from both the Teagasc Signpost programme and the Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme (ASSAP) will be available to discuss measures that farmers can adopt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality.
Teagasc biodiversity display
The Teagasc biodiversity display will also be in the sustainable livestock village and will show Ireland’s native flora and fauna found on farmland. The display will also demonstrate best practice management of Ireland’s two hedge types: treeline and topped.
