The role of the board - including the chair - of Bord Bia will be considered in the Department of Agriculture-commissioned review of Bord Bia’s governance framework.

The review was announced on Monday evening and brought to an end the Irish Farmers Association’s (IFA) protest, which had entered its sixth week, at Bord Bia headquarters.

The terms of reference of the review, seen by the Irish Farmers Journal, show that the review will consider the composition, including the eligibility, of the board and chair, along with the terms of reference for the board.

It will also examine the procedures for and management of conflicts of interest, including consideration of what constitutes a conflict of interest or a perceived conflict of interest as set out in the code of practice for the governance of State bodies.

“Specific governance-related questions which have been raised during the current period” will also be probed in the review, which is to be completed by 30 April.

Board meeting

Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon proposed the review following a meeting of Bord Bia on Thursday last.

Following a Bord Bia meeting this Monday, which began at 10am and continued into the early evening, agreement was reached on the review with the IFA standing down its protest.

Five members of the IFA who occupied the lobby of Bord Bia also exited the building on Monday evening once agreement was reached.

“Larry Murrin will remain as chair of Bord Bia and as agreed by the board and the chair in the interests of moving forward, during the period of the review, scheduled board meetings will be facilitated by another current board member,” Minister Heydon said.

“It is now time to come together to support the essential work of Bord Bia, which delivers important benefits for farmers and the agri-food sector as a whole,” he said.
