Castlerea, Elphin and Roscommon livestock marts are taking a break from chasing top-quality weanlings this weekend to support a fundraiser in memory of Sharon Sharkey.

Sharon, from Tulsk, Co Roscommon, passed away a year ago at the age of 40.

Her neighbours and friends have come together to help finance a home for her young daughter Cara and her partner Nicholas.

Sharon's father Tom and her uncle Eddie Coyne worked in all three marts over the years.

A fundraising night will take place in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown, this Saturday 16 August at 8pm.

Castlerea Mart manager Brendan Egan, Elphin Mart manager Ciaran Lynch and Roscommon Mart manager Tony Conry have all taken to social media to lend their support ahead of the event.

There will be music on the night in addition to a monster auction.

“The Sharkey and Coyne families are closely linked with the livestock marts in the county,” Tony Conry told the Irish Farmers Journal.

He added that the family has run the pedigree sales for both cattle and sheep in Roscommon for many years.

“We are getting great support from the farming community all over the country and I know it will continue over this weekend," Conry said.

All donations to the iDonate page before Saturday night’s event will be automatically entered into a draw for three fantastic prizes:

  • First prize: Husqvarna 310E Nera Automower.
  • Second prize: Five-star 18-month Parthenaise/Belgian Blue heifer.
  • Third prize: €1,000 Centre Parcs voucher.

Anonymous donations or those received after 7pm on 16 August will not be eligible for the draw, but will still go towards supporting Nicholas and Cara.
