A voluntary marine search and rescue team has helped a farmer who had a herd of cattle "trapped in flooded high water".

The incident occurred at noon on Tuesday 22 July in Ardee, Co Louth, when the Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery Service was called to assist in the animal welfare call-out.

The cattle had become trapped in flooded high water and assistance was required to bring them to dry land.

On Monday, Met Éireann had issued an orange weather warning as parts of Louth and Dublin experienced over 50mm of rainfall, posing a risk of flooding.

A spokesperson for the rescue and recovery team said: “This was an important task as we wanted to safely avoid putting the herd under any further unnecessary stress.

“The herd was safely ushered to higher land where there was no risk to their safety or wellbeing.

“Our crew returned to the boat house where equipment was restaged and ready for the next emergency call.”
