Harvest 2017 was one of the most challenging in recent memory for a vast majority of farmers, which has impacted the availability and quality of straw currently available.

Reports from the industry have suggested that the country is not experiencing the same straw shortages everywhere. In some areas straw is available, but at a higher price.

Averages at this week's fodder sale at Thainstone saw a 4x4 bale of spring barley straw is trading at £18 if it has been stored indoors, while straw that has been stored outside is moving for £5 to £6 less.

Oat straw is available in the region of £8 to £10 where it has been stored inside.

In the majority of cases where the buyer will load the straw themselves, a discount of £2 to £3 can be secured.

Hay has also been on the move, with a number of stocks being sold. Prices in the region of £20 have been reported at auctions where the hay is of good quality, but averages have ranged from £16 to £22.

Farmers in Campbeltown have paid £170/t for good straw for bedding young calves.
