The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking the views on the potential introduction of electronic identification (EID) tagging for cattle in Northern Ireland.

If EID was introduced, the numbering format on tags would have to be updated and DAERA has published a consultation seeking views on the proposal.

“With the appropriate infrastructure in place, EID can simplify the way all bovine events - including movements - are recorded, unlocking faster processes, as well as maintaining and improving NI’s standing as a region with a robust traceability regime,” a DAERA spokesperson said.

“We are keen to get feedback from all key stakeholders, particularly farmers, markets and those involved in the meat processing industry.”
