Dairy farmer Michael Bateman from Crookstown, Co Cork, spoke at the Positive Farmers Conference about calf rearing. He is milking 600 cows and has grown the farm over the last 15 years from 80 cows. He has done this by mainly rearing his own replacements, originally on his own farm but in more recent years by contract rearing away from the milking platform. Michael is keeping around 200 replacements each year and has adopted a new approach to calf rearing.
In 2016, he went on a trip to Missouri and came across a different approach to calf rearing in the first four months of life. Since the trip, Michael has tried this approach on his own farm and is very happy with the results after implementing it for the last two seasons.
