A total of 122 grandchildren inherited or were gifted farms between 2012 and 2016.

The most recent Revenue figures also show that 304 favourite nephews or nieces inherited or were gifted farms in the same period.

Favourite nephews/nieces, like children, can receive a gift or inheritance up to the value of €320,000 tax-free.

However, grandchildren, even those eligible for agricultural relief when receiving farms, must pay 33% tax on the value of a gift or inheritance over €32,500.

Last year, the IFA lobbied for Revenue to add a “favourite grandchild” category alongside the favourite nephew/niece category.
