Believe in Better

In addition to the three Ps (person, price and period), patience is vital in establishing a collaborative arrangement.

The process should not be rushed. In order to have something in place for the spring of 2018, this is a good time to start the process.

To progress consideration must be given to:

The person

The person must be right. It must be someone you can work with. That person must have a realistic farm and business plan, and must have the ability to deliver on that plan. Arrangements work best where all parties have a similar or compatible vision.

The price

The price must be fair, realistic and sustainable. Captivation by price alone is a recipe for disaster. The principal reason for the breakdown of arrangements is unrealistic plans and pricing.

The period

The period or term must be sufficient so that it works for all parties. A farm business cannot be built around very short-term agreements. A sufficiently long-term agreement provides security and certainty for all parties.

Patience

Patience is important to ensure sufficient consideration is given to all factors. Patience is required to find the right person and to come up with the right plan.

The process should never be rushed and sufficient time should be given to ensure everything is in place. The most successful arrangements are those that have followed a proper set up process answering:

  • Can I work with this person?
  • Can I make this opportunity work?
  • Have I properly considered BPS and other scheme implications?
  • Have I considered tax implications?
  • Are my family on board?
  • Is the business plan realistic and will it deliver?
  • Is the necessary stock and finance available?
