Sons of the long dead AI bull Pirate (PTE) were again in strong demand at Tullamore last Saturday. Pirate, rated for easy calving, is widely used on heifers and is noted as crossing well on daughters of the legendary Doonally New (CF52).

  • The sale topper at €5,800 was 14-month-old Glen Ivan 2nd, bred by John Jennings, Williamstown, Co Galway. Reserve champion on the day, he is by Thrunton BonJovi (AI code S750) and out of Doon Grace, by Bova Sylvain. He was purchased by A and D McAfee, Bushmills, Co Antrim.

    Selling at €5,100 was first prize winner Ballinvalley Irwin, bred by Michael Kavanagh, Ballinvalley, Oldcastle, Co Meath. He is by Pirate (PTE) and out of a home-bred dam by Doonally New. He has the top-five star rating in the terminal index and 4½ stars in the maternal index and 6.8% for calving. He was purchased by Sean O’Mahony, Kilmeely, Millstreet, Co Cork.

    Next, at €4,700 was second prize winner Oghamstone Impecaable, bred by Thomas Finnegan, Ballybeg, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo. By Pirate, he is out of a Doonally New-bred dam. He has the top-five star rating in the terminal index and four stars in the maternal index and 7.9% for calving. He was purchased by Liam Naddy, Kilmacshane, Inistioge, Co Kilkenny.

    A bid of €4,500 secured the champion Riverside Indiana 2nd for Billy Glazebrook, Crewburn Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Bred by Edwin Jones, Riverside, Kenagh, Co Longford, he is by Enfield Plexus (PXU) and out of Grangwood Butterfly, by Oldstone Egbert.

    A price of €3,950 was received by Jarleth Treacy, Claretuam, Tuam, Co Galway, from Tom Hynes, Lissylisheen, Kilfenora, Co Clare, for 14-month-old Claregal Ivor. By Liscally Eti, he is out of a home-bred dam by Pirate.

    A bid of €3,800 secured first prize winner Ballym Instabrac for Mary Bannon, Castlejordan, Tullamore, Co Offaly. Bred by Louise Quinn, Ballymoran House, Edenderry, Co Offaly, he is by the stock bull Ballym Bouvreuil and out of a home-bred dam by Pirate.

    Aidan Farrell, Boyanna, Moate, Co Westmeath, sold three of his four bulls for a total of €10,000. All three sold are by Doonally New.

    Top price of €3,700 was received by Aidan for Williamstown Ice. He is out of a granddaughter of Indurain and was purchased by Timothy Meagher, Clonan, Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

    Next, at €3,300 was Williamstown Inkerman. Out of a Padirac-bred dam, he was purchased by Anthony Smyth, Kilglass, Ahascaragh, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

    His third bull, Williamstown Ingar, sold for €3,000. Out of a dam line going back to Shamrock Ambassadeur and Enfield Hara Kiri, he was purchased by Frank Farrell, Grangebeg, Raharney, Co Westmeath.

    Aidan withdrew his fourth bull at €4,200, as he is entered for the Christmas Cracker sale on 6 December.

    Meanwhile, €3,650 was paid by Denis Murray, Dublin Road, Moate, Co Westmeath, for Claregal Issac Et, the second sale offering of the day from Jarleth Treacy, Claretuam, Tuam, Co Galway. A 14-month-old, he is by Grimaldi and out of a home-bred dam by Padirac.

    A price of €3,600 secured first prize winner Roughan Impair for Hugh McCambridge, Carnlough, Co Antrim. Bred by Pat McClean, Roughan, Newtowncunningham, Co Donegal, he is by the stock bull Roughan Echo and out of a home-bred dam by Roughan Bonheur.
