The suggestion to permit the use of pepper spray under the firearms licence was taken with a pinch of salt by Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan.

“Civilians are only entitled to use reasonable force to protect themselves and their property,” Flanagan said in response to Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice.

If pepper spray is outside the realm of reasonable force, then the days of the salt shaker are truly numbered.
