Ballinhassig auctioneer Christy Buckley is offering for sale by private treaty a fully integrated pig unit near Ballymacoda in east Cork. Also included in the sale are nine acres surrounding the unit and a three-bed bungalow residence.

The modern unit consists of a dry sow house, which is divided between 68 loose sow spaces and 70 baskets, as well as an 880ft2 x 82ft2 gilt yard. There are also five farrowing rooms with eight pens, tri-bar slats, oil-fired central heating and weaner and finisher accommodation with four rooms with eight pens. All weaner accommodation has plastic slates.

All buildings are on one site. The location of the farm from a minimal disease point of view is excellent. It is on the south coast with no other pig units in three directions.

The closest pig farms are five miles away. It may suit a bigger herd looking to develop a nucleus herd in a minimal-disease area.

Situated in an area with a lot of tillage and dairy farming, there are a lot of people in a position to take slurry from the unit. There’s an office and a mixing room for a computerised feed system. There are also storage bins for whole and ground barley, wheat, soya bean and mineral bins.

A big Dutchman wet-feed system feeds most of the unit, with the exception of the first-stage weaners, which have their own wet-dry feeders. There is an auger serving these. The finishing houses also have the option of feeding two different diets.
