Planning permission applications granted for new sheds in 2022 will be down on 2021 levels, Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show.

As of the third quarter of 2022, the latest figures available, some 639 planning permission applications have been granted. In 2021, the total number of granted applications stood at 970.

Numbers for the third quarter dipped below 200 in 2022, with 196 new sheds granted planning permission. Some 214 new farm buildings were granted in the second quarter of the year, while 229 were granted permission in the first quarter.

Looking at the third quarter of 2022, 110 new sheds were granted planning permission in the southern region (Munster, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford). In the northwest (Connacht, Monaghan, Donegal and Cavan), a total of 47 news sheds were granted permission, while in the remainder of Leinster, 39 new farm buildings got the green light from planning authorities.

TAMS

The drop could be attributed to many farmers deciding to push on with building work, such as installing milking parlours, when the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) II first opened in 2015 right after the abolishment of milk quotas. The scheme grant-aided farmers for building work.

For example, planning permissions in the final quarter of 2015 stood at 420 for the last three months of that year and increased marginally to 429 in the first quarter of 2016.

TAMS will continue in the new CAP in 2023 in the form of the On-Farm Capital Investment Scheme.
