Veterinary drugs were seized by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), during a planned search of premises near Crossmaglen in Co Armagh.

The drugs were not registered for use in NI and were seized as part of an operation carried out by the PSNI in conjunction with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate in Defra.

Inspector Leslie Badger from the PSNI said that the operation demonstrated how police can work with other agencies to seize illegal drugs.

The veterinary drugs are understood to be a type of cattle wormer.

Within the EU, individual member states have control of licencing of veterinary medicines.

In border areas, such as Crossmaglen, it is not uncommon for veterinary drugs purchased on one side of the border to be unlicensed on the other.

Arrest in Derry

Meanwhile, police in Derry arrested a 19-year-old man on Monday after receiving a report of suspicious activity at a farm in the Donnybrewer area.

“Police arrived at the address within minutes and stopped a vehicle in the vicinity. A number of items reportedly belonging to the farm were recovered from a nearby field, including a generator, welder and creamery can,” said chief inspector Alan Hutton.

The man was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
