A new £5m state of the art facility was opened by HRH Princess Anne at Lakeland Dairies in Newtownards, Co Down on Wednesday.

The new packing hall will contribute to foodservice division in Lakelands and is part of the overall £27m investment undertaken by the co-op at the Newtownards site.

“Our Newtownards base will continue to play a key role in the ongoing export success of Northern Ireland long into the future,” CEO of Lakelands, Michael Hanley said.

Princess Anne was taken on a tour of the new facility after being met by members of the Lakelands board and the Lord Lieutenant of County Down, David Lindsay.

The opening of these excellent new facilities by The Princess Royal provides great encouragement for our co-operative ideals of Better Farming, Better Business and Better Living for all of our milk producers and the provision of exceptional service and delivery for our customers throughout the world,” chair of Lakeland Dairies Alo Duffy said.

Facility

The Lakelands facility in Newtownards currently has 12 different production lines making over 100,000t of dairy products and 700m individual product units each year.

They include a number of products, including UHT milk, flavoured milk, ice cream mixes and powdered desserts.

The facility at Newtownards has twice been awarded the Queen's Award for Export and has twice won the Northern Ireland Exporter of the Year Award presented by Food from Britain.

Lakelands is currently in merger talks with LacPatrick co-op, which is also based with locations on both sides of the Irish border.
