A 50ac farm with a derelict farmhouse in Co Sligo has sold at auction for €1.23m or close to €25,000/ac. The farm at Barnasraghy, Strandhill Road came with an extensive yard of modern cattle sheds. The old farmhouse was in need of full restoration.
Bidding at the auction held by David Reynolds Auctioneers opened at €780,000. Six bidders – including a number bidding online via the LSL platform – then competed. The property was declared on the market at €980,000 and three interested parties then took the bidding to €1.1m. After a number of further bids, the farm was knocked down to a local farmer.
“There was huge interest,” David Reynolds said afterwards. “It’s not often that a farm of this size, with such a good yard, comes up for sale in this area.”
Elsewhere, a 24.7ac holding at at Ballyhegan, Co Kilkenny with a derelict house has sold at auction for €415,000 or €16,800/ac, with Donohoe Town and Country.

The land included 17ac of good quality grazing and 7ac of mature forestry, now approaching 30 years. The lands had road frontage onto the Graiguenamanagh to Ballymurphy Road.
Bidding opened at €200,000 and three active bidders competed.
The buyer is understood to be a local. “We’re seeing strong appetite from both established farmers and new entrants looking to expand or invest,” auctioneer Ed Donohoe said afterwards.
In other sales news, Quinn Property sold 10ac at Monglass, Caim, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford for €175,000 or €17,500/ac.
Hennessy Auctioneers sold 8.4ac at Cashel Cross, Ballyroan, Co Laois for €197,000 or €23,452/ac.
