Many had doubts heading into the May sale of Angus bulls in Carrick-on-Shannon over the weekend, but there proved to be a much improved trade for stronger quality bulls.

Those in attendance were willing to go as high as €4,600 for their bulls of choice.

Average price

While weaker bulls in attendance did their best to skewer the average, it still settled at €2,100.

Topping trade on the day and heading to a progressive dairy farmer was Clooncarne Rocket.

Brought out by the Mulligan family from Dromod, Co Leitrim, Rocket was a 14-month-old bull which was shown last year, placing second at the society all-Ireland finals.

Sired by the homebred Clooncarne Frank, he is out of Currycamp Holly and sold with a calving index of 2.7%.

Second-top price

Second-top price of the day and selling for €4,200 was Lawsons Ford Evaluator U410 from Michael and Barry Smith, Cootehill, Co Cavan.

This double-five-star son of Friarstown Evolver goes back on imported cow The Moss Eunique.

This bull was also a prominent feature of last year’s show circuit and sold to a pedigree breeder.
