The first production sale of the Hogan family’s Rathnashan Simmental herd took place on the sales platform pedigreesales online.co.uk over the weekend, with prices topping €10,000. The sale offered every heifer born in the herd over the autumn 2019 and spring 2020 season.

Securing the top price was Rathnashan Lettuce P. This October 2019-born heifer is a daughter of outcross bull PHS Polled Worldwide. The dam is one of the herd’s foundation females Curaheen Golda P, a Diset Darwin daughter purchased for €10,500 at the Curaheen Dispersal.

A number of keen buyers at the auction quickly increased the price before the time eventually ran out and Philip Simmers of the Backmuir Herd was announced as the successful bidder.

Rathnashan Love Bug P sold for €7,500. \ Alfie Shaw

Next in line was a call of €7,500 for Rathnashan Love Bug P. Born in August 2019, this is the first daughter of Coose Jericho to be offered for sale. Her dam is the homebred Kilbride Farm Bantry daughter Rathnashan Heidi, which stood as reserve junior cow last year in Tullamore.

Two half-brothers to this stylish heifer won their respective classes at the national finals in Strokestown last year before being exported to the UK for pedigree breeding. This one was also the pick of Simmers.

Rathnashan Millie Empress sold for €7,300 P. \ Alfie Shaw

Just behind this and securing a €7,300 price tag was Rathnashan Millie Empress P. This heifer was only born in January of this year and sired by the herd’s stock bull Heathbrow Himalya, while the dam is Seafort Empress.

Displaying tonnes of show potential, maternal siblings to this heifer already won classes at the society national finals over the last number of years. Not stopping with the two top prices, Backmuir Farms was back to secure Millie Empress also.

Rathnashan Legsfirst ET sold for €6,200. \ Alfie Shaw

Coming in at €6,200 was Rathnashan Legsfirst ET, again purchased by the same buyer. Born in early November 2011, this heifer is sired by three times’ Balmoral breed champion Dermotstown Delboy. Her maternal side is equally impressive, with her dam, Seafort Beverly, already producing four sons, which sold to recognised herds throughout the UK.

Also born in November 2019 was the ET full sister to Legsfirst, Rathnashan Lasagne Bev. This one hit the market at €5,500, selling to Jason Griffen from Co Clare.

At a price tag of €5,000 was Rathnashan Lemon Cara ET. This heifer, born at the end of October 2019, is sired by Lamhoj Supery and is out of the herd foundation cow Seafort Cara.

The line has produced exceptionally well for the Hogan family, with Seafort Cara’s first son purchased by Bova AI, while another son won a number of national titles along with claiming the junior championship at the society’s premier sale. Securing Lemon Cara with an automatic bid was Chris Weatherup from Co Antrim.

Overall, the sale proved a huge success, with the 11 young heifers averaging at €5,636. Bulls proved trickier, with one of the two selling for €3,000.
