The Limousin was one of the best represented breeds at the Highland show this week with a super dispaly of young bulls and heifers on show. Mr Chris Jerman had the tough job of selecting the prize winners in the Limousin ring. From Caersws, Wales, Chris runs a 100 cow pedigree herd along with 65,000 free range laying hens over 700 acres.

He found his Supreme Champion in Foxhillfarm Naomi who came from Mike and Melanie Alford’s herd of 20 pedigree Limousins near Cullompton in Devon. This daughter of the record-priced 140,000gns Trueman Jagger who just turned in June and has been unbeaten in her class in the show ring, most recently standing Inter-Breed Champion at Devon and the Royal Cornwall shows. Following on from her junior championship honours at the Royal Welsh Show last year, she secured the Alfords their fourth supreme title at the Royal Highland show, having previously won with Foxhillfarm Mammamia, Foxhillfarm Jasper and Foxhillfarm Gracie. Naomi’s dam is by Wilodge Vantastic going back to the famous cow, Bankdale Alice.

“The Champion has everything I want in a Limousin – power, shape, size and femininity,” said Mr Jerman

The Reserve Female Champion came from across the water in Co. Down with Gareth Small’s Strathearn Red Oopsadaisy scooping the reserve rosette. It was quite an achievement for the Small’s with this being just the second pedigree bred by Gareth. Another Trueman Jagger daughter, this time born in January 2018, she also added the Supreme Junior honours to her take later in the day. Her dam is Claragh Layla, a Vantastic daughter bought by Gareth for 18,000gns at Carlisle and one of only two breeding cows owned by the family in Kilkeel, County Down

The Irish were out in force around the ring and commenting from the side of the ring Paul Sykes, Irish Limousin Cattle Society breed secretary said “I’m very impressed with the females on show and I am also very pleased to see some Irish genetics doing very well in some of the classes.”
