Last Sunday’s remarkable results at Naas provided further evidence that the Irish flat racing scene is as competitive as it ever has been.

The best evidence of this was the result of the Listed Sole Power Sprint Stakes which went the way of Michael Browne’s 5,000 guineas purchase Logo Hunter, who didn’t just scramble home but won by all of four and a half lengths.

The Tipperary-based Browne has had just 37 runners on turf in the last five seasons, which makes this success all the more remarkable.

He said: “I can’t describe the thrill.

“I’ve never had a horse like this one before. He’s a dream to train and to do anything with. Cristiano, a neighbour of mine, bought him at the sales and what a buy he was.

“He had a wind problem and we got him hobdayed [breathing operation] and in fairness to Ger Lyons [former trainer] he said he could be a very good horse if we got his wind sorted out. I think he’s good enough to go for a Group 1 and hopefully he’ll run for us again but small trainers don’t usually hang on to horses like him.”

Other notable performances on the card were that of Hermana Estrella and A Case Of You. The former, trained by James ‘Fozzy’ Stack, remarkably made a winning debut in a Group 3 contest, marking her out as a filly of serious potential.

A Case Of You’s last gasp win in the Group 3 Lacken Stakes, an excellent trial for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, represented yet another step forward by the progressive Dublin trainer Ado McGuinness who said: “I’m delighted. We were under a bit of pressure after his run the last day but he’s shown that he’s a good horse.

“He had the form and we’ll go to Ascot now for the Commonwealth Cup. It’s great to have these horses and these owners who can take us to these big meetings.”
