Road users should be on the lookout for tractors, trailers and other farm machinery exiting from fields and farm yards as silage cutting commences, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has warned.

“It will soon be a very busy time of year for farmers, with silage cutting starting shortly. The number of tractors and trailers out using the roads will increase dramatically.

“As such, drivers should be on the lookout for tractors, trailers and other farm machinery exiting from fields and farm yards.

“We ask them to be patient if following behind these vehicles and we would ask farmers to allow following traffic to pass if there is a safe opportunity to do so,” an RSA spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Road fatalities

To date this year, there has been 50 people killed on Irish roads, the spokesperson said.

“We will be entering the summer period soon and many people are out of their usual routines.

"Sadly, the summer months can result in more fatalities and serious injuries.

"We ask that motorists stay safe on the roads by slowing down and driving at an appropriate speed, always wear your seatbelt and ensure your passengers also do so.

“Drivers, be on the lookout for other road users, especially vulnerable road users, as there are many more pedestrians and cyclists making the most of the good weather.

"The road is a shared space and we would urge everyone to respect each other’s right to be there.

“Pedestrians and cyclists also have a responsibility to make sure they follow the rules of the road the same as everyone else.”

The RSA is also reminding motorists to be aware of unexpected changes in the weather conditions that can have an effect on the control of the vehicle, for example when it rains after a sunny period the roads may be greasy and could catch people by surprise.
