A group of SaMASZ dealers and customers travelled to Bialystok, Poland, for a factory tour of the new 13ha SaMASZ production site in the company of Timmy O’Brien Egmont Agri, based in Mallow, Co Cork.

SaMASZ manufactures agricultural and municipal machinery, including mowers, rakes, tedders, tub feeders, snow ploughs, and verge mowers. They are known mainly for their grass range here in Ireland.

Brief history

SaMASZ was founded in 1984 by mechanical engineer Antoni Stolarski. Antoni started producing potato diggers (harvesters) alongside his father in a rented garage located in Bialystok.

The first year saw the manufacture of 15 potato diggers (harvesters) and the employment of two workers.

By 1986, the company had produced its first mower, a 1.65m drum mower, the start of the company’s bread and butter grass/hay range of today.

By 2007, the new generation range of products were launched. At this stage, SaMASZ was exporting to Russia, pushing exports to over 65%

By 1988, a total of 267 potato diggers had been produced and distributed throughout Poland as the company expanded, employing 12 full-time staff. In 1994, agreements were made to export machines to Germany, which saw a further rise in production (1,417 mowers per year). By 1998, exports had risen to over 60% of production output, exporting to Portugal, Spain and beyond, and now included a disc mower range.

By 2007, the new generation range of products were launched. At this stage, SaMASZ was exporting to Russia, pushing exports to over 65%.

The completion of the 50,000th mower came in 2008, the same year the MegaCUT and GigaCUT joined the product portfolio.

The company has grown ever since, adding new machines to its portfolio almost every year.

Today, SaMASZ also manufactures a range of municipal machines (flail mowers, hedge cutters) and snow/ice management equipment (graters, snow ploughs), offering over 300 different machines in total across the ranges.

It is now a significant player in the Polish machinery manufacturing sector, claiming to be one of the top five in the country.

February 2018 saw the relocation of the company to the new world-class 13ha manufacturing premises which cost in excess of 90m Polish Zloty (over €20m) to build.

The reason for moving was due to the company’s growth, among other factors such as high land prices at the old facility and lack of space for expansion.

One acre of ground at the old SaMASZ site is claimed to be the equivalent in price to 24ac at the new site, just located 20 minutes down the road.

This played a factor in the company’s relocation.

Production is now reportedly at 9,000 machines per year in the new factory, the highest ever seen, with scope for increased capacity in the future.

  • SaMASZ in Ireland

The Polish manufacturers are relatively new to the Irish market, with Timmy O’Brien of Egmont Agri being the first man to make it a reality.

The new SaMASZ factory cost a total of €20m.

Having seen what the company had to offer at Agritechnica in 2011, Timmy was more than impressed with the build quality and soon thought to himself that there may be a market for the brand back home.

In 2014, Egmont Agri became the sole Irish importers and distributors for SaMASZ farm machinery

After many talks with SaMASZ, Timmy made the decision to get machines sent over so he could trial them for the season and see how they went.

One season on, Timmy was more than impressed with how the mowers went, having no issues.

From there, Timmy grew the business. In 2014, Egmont Agri became the sole Irish importers and distributors for SaMASZ farm machinery.

This move suited Timmy well due to the fact he runs a fleet of balers and understands the importance of a quality product.

The GigaCUT and KDF mowers, currently the best selling product on the Irish market.

Today, Timmy has six dealers throughout the country selling his equipment, which is proving more and popular to customers for multiple reasons including the brand’s two-year warranty. Both Timmy and his dealers carry a large quantity of parts as a backup service to their customers.

    The dealers are:

  • Kieran McAteer, Banbridge, Co Down.
  • Agrimann Ltd, Carnaross, Kells, Co Meath.
  • Tobin & Cantwell Ltd, Coalbrook, Thurles, Co Tipperary.
  • West Waterford Agri, Ballymote, Tallow, Co Waterford.
  • McGrath Agri Contractors, Kiltown, Co Kilkenny.
  • WW Doherty Ltd, Adare, Co Limerick.
  • Perhaps the green and white colours of the brand are ones to keep an eye on for the future.
