Before Athenry Men’s Shed could be established, a premises was needed – and it was chair John Murry who got the ball rolling. “We opened our doors on 12 June last year, but we spent six months before that searching for a place. I was the one who started the search. I put it in the church news, and after that other men started to contact me, which is how we got going.”

Located on the outskirts of Athenry town, the shed offers a place of tranquillity for its members. “The shed is two miles outside Athenry. The location is absolutely fantastic. We have a shed and a garden – and it is all down to the generosity of Teagasc. They look after us exceptionally well.”

The shedders are keen gardeners, but when the weather is not permitting outdoor activity they love to get stuck into woodwork. “We would do a lot of timber work. We have made bird boxes, bat boxes, flower boxes and dog kennels. It keeps us very busy,” says John.

The profits that the Men’s Shed members make from their products enable them to sustain the shed. “We are not a profit-making business, but we are getting paid for our creations, which goes towards the shed. “The insurance went up last year, so the membership has increased a bit, so that we can keep the shed running.”

While the shedders love the physical work, it is not the central focus of the social set-up. “Men’s health is very important here in the shed, which is a very social place where men can come for tea, a chat and a bit of craic, which is what it is all about,” says John.

Athenry Men’s Shed has 41 members, and their doors are always open. “We are open Monday to Friday, from 11am to 4pm, and anyone can join the shed. Members come from various background, from Post Office workers to bus drivers. We also cater for those with disabilities.”
