As the recent so-called ‘golfgate’ controversy has demonstrated, the Irish people will have no mercy on any group of individuals who fail to abide by the COVID-19 restrictions that we are all enduring.

In light of this, it was heartening to take note of two recent equestrian stories which highlighted rider compliance both at home and abroad. Firstly there was Showjumping Ireland (SJI) chair Eamon Rice doubling down on protocol adherence at home shows. Secondly there was the circulated picture of Ireland’s pony dressage team in which social distancing was perfectly exemplified.

This latter photo was in stark contrast to that which came out of the first European Nations Cup of the year at Prague a few weeks back. Amazingly it displayed all 12 members of the top three teams plus their managers crammed like seeds in a sunflower on to a tiny prize giving podium. One wondered where were the FEI stewards and technical delegates who were supposed to apply the guidelines.

The bottom line whether jumping at home or abroad, must be that the basic COVID-19 restrictions should be strictly adhered to if we are to keep equestrian sport alive. Happily that was done when Ireland’s team of Cillian Curran, Rachel Carr, Oscar O’Connor and Martha Jobling-Purser put in a good performance at the Europeans in Hungary.

SJI message

Chair Eamon Rice’s message to all riders last week was specific and urgent: “We in Showjumping Ireland need to put as many measures as possible in place to ensure that our sport and industry remain open.” To this end the following regulations must be adhered to:

• Facemasks are mandatory at all SJI affiliated events. They must be worn by all except while mounted.

• All those members who do not absolutely need to be at shows should stay at home.

• For children in pony classes only one parent or guardian is allowed.

• The 2m distancing protocol must be observed at all times.

• Any rider returning from an international event cannot compete at or attend an SJI event for 14 days.

• Covid–19 track and trace must be completed via the SJI live programme prior to attending an affiliated event.

Once again Rice emphasised that compliance officers will be in attendance at all venues and full co-operation with them is essential.
