The last of the 2019 spring sales of the Irish Angus Munster branch took place last weekend, with trade back on previous years. A strong catalogue of over 60 entries saw a total of 42 forward for sale. Of these, 27 found new homes, with a 65% clearance rate. This was matched with an average sale price of €2,000, back €300 on the 2018 year.

The day’s reserve champion, Ballinacragga Roscoe, ran proceedings in the sales ring when he was knocked down for the top price of €2,700. This March 2018-born bull was bred and exhibited by Aidan Moloney and was secured by AI company Dovea Genetics. He was sired by the herd stock bull Powerstown Nevan and out of dam Doon Nell.

Judges

Tasked with judging the pre-sale show were Ben and Elaine Ryall of the Fellfort herd. They found their overall champion in the form of long-time breeder Denis Twomey’s Tubridmore Re Rebel. This five-star bull is a son of Bunlahy John G while the dam is out of Oakchurch Dictator. A higher than average calving figure of 4.7% didn’t help the champion in the ring, and he left unsold having failed to meet his reserve.

Carrigroe Pat, the oldest bull catalogued on the day, took home a price of €2,550. Bred and exhibited by John Appelbe, this first-prize-winning bull had a calving index of 2.6% and is a son of Cornamuckla Lord Hardy.

Not far behind at a price of €2,500 was John Murphy with Mercury Perfect Eric. Another red rosette winner, Eric is a son of former stock bull Luddenmore Just the Business and an Aynho Rossister Eric-bred dam.
