Snow showers will affect Ulster and Connacht this Monday night and will extend to most other areas late in the night and during Tuesday morning. Some accumulations of snow are likely, especially in northern and western areas and over hills elsewhere. Slippery conditions are expected until the small hours of Wednesday morning.

The Met Office has issued a similar snow and ice warning valid until 6pm on Wednesday in Northern Ireland. Overnight snow showers will continue on Tuesday, although they may turn to sleet and hail near some coasts. Over the hills, snow will drift in the strong to gale force winds.

Strong to gale force winds

Meanwhile, a wind warning applies to all counties along the Atlantic coast. Westerly winds will reach mean speeds of 60 to 65km/h and gusts of 100 to 110km/h at times. They may become stronger in exposed areas during Tuesday afternoon.

The current wind warning ends at 3am on Wednesday, but Met Éireann expects to issue further warnings for Wednesday night.

This comes with a status yellow warning for high seas, leading to an increased risk of coastal flooding along Atlantic coasts, valid until 9am on Thursday.
