While most parts of the country are still awaiting the start of summer weather, it is make or break time for those sourcing cattle for grass, as it is the second week of April.

With grass growth now increasing rapidly, grass covers are building and buyers are out in force sourcing cattle.

Those who have to source cattle for the seven-month retention period for the ANC Scheme must have cattle in their herd number before the end of May and hold them into next January to meet the rule.

In addition to meeting the seven-month retention period, applicants must also maintain an annual average stocking rate of 0.15LU/ha calculated over the 12 months of the calendar year.

The ANC requirements are resulting in strong demand at marts, as grass buyer activity increases. This has been most evident for store cattle, where prices have improved slightly on last week. Feeders are also very active to source cattle and replenish stocks, driven by a strong beef trade.

Steers

Forward store prices have rebounded, with prices back on par with the same period last year. The average 650kg steer is making €2.15/kg, with U grades making €2.40/kg and more. The average 550kg bullock is selling for over €1,200/head. The top third in the same weight range are making €1,300 to €1,450, which is up €20 to €30/head on the same time last year. Lighter stores are holding firm, with mart managers reporting more grass buyer activity coinciding with greater grass growth.

Heifers

The heifer trade has improved on last week, with forward stores strongest. A combination of improved grass buyer demand and strong feeder activity has bolstered prices. Heavy heifers over 600kg are small in number, while the majority of those from 500kg to 600kg are selling from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg for average-quality types and up to €1,400 for the top third. Lighter store heifers from 400kg to 500kg are selling from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg for average-quality R grades and up to €2.60/kg for better-quality U grades.

Weanlings

Good quality continental heifers are holding firm, with plenty of farmer buyers and exporters keeping a firm floor under the trade. Plainer weanling heifers and bulls, particularly dairy-crosses, are being met with mixed demand at some sales and prices have been a little more variable as a result. The average 350kg bull and heifer are selling mainly from €790 to €840/head. The top third of bulls and heifers are selling mainly from €2.60/kg to €2.80/kg. Where plain-quality lighter bulls and heifers are on offer, prices have been a little easier.
