The past week has seen another strong trade for all types of cattle right across the country, while poor grass growth is affecting demand from some grass buyers.

Sellers, particularly in the south are holding off selling by a week or two also in order to match sales with peak demand.

That said, many mart managers have reported that farmers who have sold cattle in the past week or two have been very satisfied with the prices achieved.

Grass buyers who have some grass or fodder and do not have housing are sourcing stock now, as they will have to hold them until October in order to meet the seven-month retention period for the ANC payment.

In addition to this group of buyers, others are sourcing cattle in order to have numbers purchased early to avoid a price increase that may come with better weather and improved grass growth.

Steers

Heavy bullocks over 600kg are only available in small numbers. Where on offer, they are being met with strong finisher and factory agent demand. The average 650kg R grade steer is making €760 along with the weight, up about €60 to €70/head on the same time last year. Forward store numbers are improving and grass buyer demand is firm. Prices of these are ranging from €600 over to €700 over for R grades and up to €840 over for U+ grades. The average 450kg continental store is making €580 to €600 over the weight.

Heifers

The heifer trade is holding quite well across the country. Although MartWatch is showing prices to have dipped, this has been mainly due to the impact of a number of special sales on prices in recent weeks. Heifers over 600kg are very scarce and a very strong trade. Forward stores from 500kg to 600kg are selling from €630 to €700 over for R grades. Angus and Herefords are selling from €1.90/kg to €2.05/kg in most areas. Lighter store heifers from 400kg to 500kg are selling for €17 to €20/head above the same week last year.

Weanlings

Weanling bulls are a firm trade, with prices holding at the same level as recent weeks. Export demand is steady, with buyers active right across the country. Farmers are driving the trade for good-quality weanling bulls and heifers from 300kg to 400kg. The average 350kg bull and heifer are making €820 to €870/head. Charolais and Limousin-crosses continue to be met with the strongest demand. Where heavy bulls are on offer, specialist finishers are still actively buying and prices are steady.
