The increase is thought to be strongly influenced by a vibrant trade for slaughter fit cattle and cows, with more farmers opting to take advantage of competition in the live ring.
Top-quality weanling bulls met a particularly brisk trade, with a significant number of bulls topping the €2.80/kg to €3/kg mark, while bulls weighing 300kg to 400kg sold on average for €2.57/kg.
Any slaughter-fit or short-keep cattle are being snapped up by factory agents and specialist finishers, while there are more buyers active for store cattle for summer grazing systems.
Tight supplies are being compounded by a number of buyers very active in the market for ewes for exporting live and inserting strong competition into the market.
Bullocks or heifers which were fit for slaughter or within touching distance of it generated the strongest demand, with lots over 600kg averaging €2.80/kg and topping €3/kg on three occasions.
