On Friday night, as usual, the ‘Know Your Ag’ quiz, sponsored by the Irish Farmers Journal, took place virtually. Twenty seven teams from across the country took part. Katriona Kinsella from the Irish Farmers Journal was the quiz master for the evening, testing the participants’ knowledge on all things agriculture.

The results were announced live on Facebook that evening, with Donoughmore Macra in first place, Maudabawn Macra in second place and Kenmare Macra coming third. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to Pat O’Toole, Irish Farmers Journal, for compiling the questions.

Saturday morning started as usual with the 12 best new member candidates being put through their paces in an interview held over Zoom. They were judged by Macra past president Sean Finan and former member Alison Holmes.

At 7pm, the ‘Club of the Year’ finals began live on Facebook and we were joined by our MC for the evening, Jamie Flannery, Carrigaline Macra.

It all kicked off with the 14 club finalists presenting a photograph that best described their club.

They were joined by judges James Healy, past president of Macra, Breeda Maher, former training and development officer and Eileen Kelly, rural clubs and volunteer co ordinator from the Youth Work Services in the midlands.

When the presentations were finished, the judges left to deliberate, and we were introduced to our 12 best new members.

Before the judge’s results were announced, a special message from the 2 Johnnies were played wishing all contestants the best of luck.

Finally, the results were in:

  • Best New Member 2020 – Aoife O’Connor, Freemount Macra.
  • Most Improved Club of the Year – Tullow Macra.
  • Joint Club of the Year Runners Up – Kenmare and Kilmallock Macra.
  • 2020 Club of the Year – Callan Macra.
  • Congratulations to all clubs and members who took part and a big thank you to all of our judges for giving up their time.

    We will host our national conference together with the European Council of Young Farmers, Devenish, and the Global Network of Lighthouse Farms on 13 November.

    The conference this year will be in the form of a webinar titled “One Health: from soil to society.”
