THEN: Back in 2009, Chris O’Dowd gave up his lunch break to talk to a “thoroughly smitten” Maria Moynihan about his journey from Boyle to the big time, having started his acting career by auditioning for a place in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Actor Chris O'Dowd appeared on the cover of Irish Country Living in 2009.

"I hadn't really even considered trying to make a career out of acting or anything, but I got in, and it was only one in 1,000 who got in, so I thought maybe I should give it a go," he explained.

At the time of the interview, Chris was playing Roy in the TV comedy series The IT Crowd, starring in the recently released comedy The Boat That Rocked and filming Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black.

"I go to Pinewood every day at the moment to do Gulliver's Travels and on the way, there's a 100m poster of The Boat That Rocked. And I'm like, 'Wow, things have changed a little bit'," he told us.

But, of course, that was just the beginning…

NOW: Shortly after appearing on the cover, Chris hit the big time in Hollywood after playing the love interest in the Judd Apatow comedy Bridesmaids.

Further film roles followed including The Sapphires, Juliet, Naked, This Is 40, Friends With Kids and Calvary.

Closer to home, he filmed his successful TV series Moone Boy in his native Roscommon from 2012 to 2015, while, more recently, a role in the short-form British comedy series State of the Union saw him win a Primetime Emmy award in 2019.

He has also taken to the stage and was nominated for a Tony award for his role in Of Mice and Men opposite James Franco in 2014.

In his personal life, he is married to writer and presenter Dawn O’Porter and is a father of two sons: Art and Valentine.

He is also one of the most down to earth celebrities to follow on Twitter @BigBoyler.

Maybe we need another catch-up interview?
