There will be no three-crop rule for 2018, due to a relaxation of the rules sanctioned by the European Commission.

Earlier in the month both Northern Ireland and Scotland requested a relaxation from the Commission, which was granted last Thursday.

In response to this, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing MSP has said: “I welcome this sensible decision by Commissioner Hogan to grant a one season derogation from the three-crop rule.”

NFU Scotland president Andrew McCornick also commented on the sanction.

“Although we are deep into the planting season, a derogation from the three-crop requirement may yet make a difference to some of our farmers.

“It is already so late for some parts of the country, that fallow may be a more economic option than planting.”

NFU Scotland is reminding all farmers that other Greening rules still remain in place.
