Malting barley growers are getting about 1c from every pint of stout sold in Ireland at €5, Irish Farmers Journal analysis has found.

After VAT and excise duties, the rest of the supply chain is receiving €3.50/pint.

While grain prices are high at present, farmers are facing into a season of even higher fertiliser costs and input availability is in question.

Chair of the Irish Grain Growers Group Bobby Miller said that farmers’ confidence in the drinks industry this autumn was rattled by energy surcharges as they delivered the first of their grain.

When contacted, the IFA had no comment to make.
