Tillage management: sunshine offers both benefits and threats

While the sunshine and heat are very welcome, they are pushing crops rapidly through growth stages and dryness is now an obvious issue in both winter and spring crops.

Prolonged drought stress will result in pale plants, yellow leaves and spotting. Yield potential is being lost when these symptoms persist.

Dryness is already causing patches of winter barley to senesce early due to lack of moisture.

Heat will drive development

Some areas got rain, others didn’t, but all areas are getting the heat and sunshine. This is the type of year where healthy well-structured soils prove their worth. But even these are showing signs of drought.
