The 2018 National Hall of Fame Awards will be held in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, on Saturday 12 May, when 21 nominees from the bovine, equine and ovine industries will be presented with their awards by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten.

This is the 16th year of the National Hall of Fame Awards and it is fully sold out with 400 supporters from the bovine, equine and ovine industries renewing old friendships and making many new ones.

  • Lifetime achievement award: the lifetime achievement award will be presented to Michael Burke MRCVS and managing director of the Chanelle Group, Loughrea, Co Galway, for his development and production of generic animal pharmaceuticals in Ireland and their marketing and distribution worldwide.
  • Farmer’s Oscar: the Farmer’s Oscar Award for 2018 goes to Michael Earls, managing director of Easyfix Rubber Products, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, in recognition of his contribution to animal welfare and his award-winning innovative technology in livestock housing solutions, not only in Ireland but worldwide.
  • High-yielding cows, state-of-the-art LED lighting, enhanced cow comfort and optimal nutrition are some of the key features of the Redhouse Herd – the farm at which Holstein NI’s family farm open day will be held. Herd owners, the Irwins from Benburb, Co Tyrone, are set to welcome visitors on Saturday 21 April, from 11am to 4pm.

    The event promises to be a fun-filled day for all members of the family and will be supported by principal sponsors Dale Farm, Fane Valley Feeds and Volac.

    More than 60 trade stands will be in attendance, and proceeds will be divided between three charities – Alzheimer’s Society, Yellow Ribbon NI, and Pedigree Cattle Trust.

    In the last 25 years, 208 individual cows from the Redhouse Herd have recorded yields in excess of 50t, while 20 have produced lifetime yields of more than 100t, with one hitting the 150t pinnacle.

    The farm, managed by Alan Irwin, and his son David, produces 2.3m litres of milk annually.

    The 170-cow herd is currently averaging over 13,000 litres per cow per annum at 4.00% butterfat and 3.28% protein, with 946kg of combined fat and protein, and a calving interval of 388 days.

    Items for the charity auction include calves from Redhouse and Moneyquin, and Ireland rugby shirts signed by Grand Slam captain Rory Best, and centre Chris Farrell.

    Thurles set for fifth annual Lisduff bull sale

    Leo and James McEnroe, Virginia, Co Cavan, are set to host their annual Angus bull sale in Thurles Mart on Wednesday 25 April. The sale, now in its fifth year, has grown in stature since it was first held in 2014, with 40 bulls now making their way to the mid-Tipp mart.

    Bulls range from one to two years, made up of 30 black bulls and 10 red bulls, which caused quite a stir in the 2017 sale.

    This sale has made a name for itself by providing good-quality, ready-to-work bulls and also by achieving some of the best Angus prices anywhere throughout the year. Last year’s sale topped €8,000, which stood as the top bull price for an Angus in Ireland sold through auction.

    Trip of a lifetime for young Charolais enthusiasts

    This year, two young Charolais enthusiasts will get the opportunity to travel to Canada, for an International Charolais Youth Development Programme.

    All expenses will be covered by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society and Charolais International. The qualifiers for this programme were held in Elphin on Saturday 24 March, following the premier show and sale.

    Candidates

    Fifteen candidates aged between 18 and 22 years old took part in the competition, which involved stockjudging, guess the weight of cattle and a questionnaire on their knowledge of the Charolais breed.

    The two candidates with the highest points won the once in a lifetime trip.

    Coming out on top with 39 points was Mark Whelan from Borris-in-Ossory, Co Laois. Mark is 20 years old and son of Kevin Whelan. In second place was Michael Carey on 37 points. Michael is also 20 years old and son of Michael Sr and brother to Ronan.

    Both young men were delighted to except their prize of a week-long trip to Canada in July, where they will meet young Charolais breeders from all over the world.
