Travel bursaries awarded to top Ag students

The Agricultural Science Association (ASA) and the Irish Farmers Journal have announced the details of the recipients of the much sought-after PWE (Professional Work Experience) travel bursaries. In total, six third level Agricultural Science students, four from University College Dublin (UCD) and two from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), will benefit from the awards, which will support them while on work placements in the USA, Canada and New Zealand this year.

The bursary is designed to encourage students to broaden their knowledge and travel internationally to gain experience in the global agri-food sector.

From UCD, the recipients of the 2018 Travel Bursary in association with the ASA and Irish Farmers Journal are:

  • Mairead Fox from Moat in Westmeath will travel to Missouri in the USA where she will work with Emerald Dairies in Carthage.
  • Michael Kean from Claremorris in Mayo will travel to Idaho in the USA in May where he will undertake a dairy placement with 4 Bro’s Dairy in Shoshone.
  • Michael Delaney from Nenagh in Tipperary will travel to Saskatchewan in Canada where he will work on a beef and tillage farm.
  • Mattthew Lang from Tubbercurry in Sligo will travel to Canterbury in New Zealand where he will work on a 1250 cow dairy farm.
  • From WIT, the recipients of the 2018 Travel Bursary in association with the ASA, Irish Farmers Journal, Glanbia and Seedtech are:

  • Ailish Osbourne from Castledermot in Kildare will travel to New Zealand where she will work on a dairy farm with 820 cows for four months.
  • Ailish Osbourne from Co Kildare who attends WIT and will be going to New Zealand

  • James Waters, WIT Agricultural Science student from Ballinfull, Sligo will travel to Ohio in the USA where he will work on the Miedema Dairy farm.
  • James Waters from Sligo who attends WIT and will be going to the US.

    This is the third year in which the ASA and Irish Farmers Journal have come together to reward third-year students who opt to do the work experience element of their course overseas. The WIT bursaries are also supported by Glanbia and Seedtech.

    Various colleges to attend UCD graduate open evening

    A new event aimed at UCD final-year undergraduate students and/or anyone who is considering doing a Taught Master’s Programme at UCD will take place on 21 February.

    The event, which will be hosted in UCD’s O’Reilly Hall from 4pm, will have all six UCD colleges present there to talk to prospective graduate students about their programmes on offer.

    Other institutions such as UCC, CIT and UL will also have stands at the event. All attendees should register below on the Graduate Admissions website at http://www.ucd.ie/graduateadmissions/open-evening/
