In 2016, the beautiful and elegant Ballymagooly House at Mallow, Co Cork, came on the market. At that time, the full package was 7,000 square feet of gorgeous residential accommodation, 900m of salmon fishing rights, nine acres of woodland and 82 acres of tillage and grassland.

The property stirred up both local and national interest over the course of 2017, and before Christmas the residence on 22 acres was sold.

The sale is believed to have made its guide of circa €625,000. Still remaining, however, are 75 acres, 66 acres of which is very good-quality tillage ground, with the balance laid out in woodland. This package is guided for €825,000.

The sold package

Described as a “trophy property”, Ballymagooly House, Mallow, is simply stunning.

The original Ballymagooly House was demolished in the 1960s and the current residence is a conversion of the former coach houses and stables, which was completed a decade later. In essence it is two houses joined together, but could be opened up into a single unit, if desired.

Currently used as two separate entities, the former owners upgraded the main residential area about 20 years ago, to include three reception rooms, a library, kitchen, utility, gallery, four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

This area of the house is in excellent condition and features solid timber doors, a mahogany staircase, a French marble chimneypiece, beech-fitted kitchen and cast-iron bath.

The adjoining annex, which requires some updating, extends to two reception rooms, a kitchen, sunroom, five bedrooms and two bathrooms. This area could be used as a separate granny flat, staff accommodation or a farm office.

To the rear of the house is a stone-built barn, seven stables and a workshop. Sold with this were 22 acres of good-quality lands.

What is to be sold?

The remaining 75 acres are still up for grabs for a nifty €825,000. As mentioned, the 66 acres of tillage ground are of good quality. Previously laid out in winter wheat and maize, the lands have just been ploughed and set. Auctioneer Michael D. Daniels, of Michael H Daniels and Company, Fermoy, believes the sale of the house has increased the interest for the balance to be sold.

He told Irish Country Living that the sale of the house has encouraged farmers to pursue the lands and made the sale less complicated for them. This particular offering is in one lot. A separate lot is also up for grabs, consisting of six acres of fishing bank to the Blackwater, guided for €75,000. The sale is by private treaty.
