Two Co Derry farmers were airlifted to hospital on Saturday after an incident involving slurry. The father and son were believed to be mixing slurry on their poultry unit, on Ballyhanedin Road near Claudy, when they were overcome by fumes.

The swift arrival of the emergency services saw the men transferred to the near-by Altnagelvin Hospital where they are recovering and in a stable condition.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon and it is understood that the son was mixing hen slurry inside the shed when he was overcome by slurry gas.

The father then entered the shed to rescue his son and was also overcome by fumes. The two men in question are understood to be in their 70s and 40s respectively. Emergency services, including the air ambulance were called to the scene around 3.45pm.
