There are 15 days left to the closed period for slurry spreading.

The deadlines for spreading chemical fertiliser and slurry were extended by two weeks this year. Chemical fertiliser could only be spread until 30 September and slurry until 30 October.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed made the announcement at Tullamore Show in August to help farmers promote grass growth after drought conditions.

Encouraged

Chair of the IFA environment and rural affairs committee Thomas Cooney encouraged farmers to get tanks fully emptied with two weeks left in the slurry-spreading season.

“Farmers could extend the grazing season by spreading slurry. Ground conditions are reasonably ok, so we are encouraging farmers to avail of the opportunity, as it might not be there come spring,” he said.

Cooney reminded farmers to be careful around spreading slurry near waterways and to use the proper set-back distances when spreading.
