US milk production for October stood at 7.8bn litres, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

This represents a 1.4% increase on the 7.7bn litres produced by US dairy farmers in October last year.

The strong production figures in October bring cumulative US milk production for the first 10 months of 2017 close to 79bn litres, which is 1.5% ahead of this time last year.

Milk producing states

Of the big milk producing states in the US, California continues to see sharp declines in milk production with October milk supplies down 2.3% to 1.4bn litres.

Milk production in California, which is the largest dairy state in the US, is in decline as drought, environmental pressures and more and more farmers exit dairying in favour of other forms of agriculture such as growing nut crops.

In the midwest states, milk production continues to push on. October milk production in Wisconsin was up 2.3% to 1.1bn litres, while milk supplies in Michigan increased 3.3% to 409m litres.

In Texas, milk production continues to expand at a rapid pace with October supplies up more than 5% to 426m litres.

Earlier this month, the USDA updated its forecast for US milk production for the full year 2017 to hit 94.6bn litres, which would be 1.6% ahead of 2016 production.
